ABSTRACT
Design Project as a series of a deep procession until the last stage, divided into three stages. As the first step of the stages, the framework of this stage is related with the Thesis that will be developed further and move on from some researches that have been done through the research methodology.
In development area of design project A, some efforts have been done by following the framework which was already made:
- Research activity, including documentary analysis and case studies from some architects that related with the thesis.
- Translation or transform research method from the case studies into design methodology that will feed the design project.
- Choosing one site as an exploration area of design
- Design activity, including concept scheme, sketches, and model to achieve the goal of the purpose in creating Balinese atmosphere.
All this process have connection each others and will be more explain in the next chapter, therefore all of this process will affect the design process.
CONTENT
This design project for the first stage framework explores the interaction between project and the relation of work that have been done so far. There are four parts in this content that will explore to explain the process of the first design project.
A. Research
Some researches have been done so far in this project are:
1. Geoffery Bawa
It is useful to keep in mind that Bawa is very much a man of the end of modern era seen from his years of study. Actually, it gave effect because of he was trained abroad, widely read and travelled, so that he knows what is going on elsewhere in the world, but in the one hand, he is admired with the Ceylon architecture. He has done some effort to reconcile both of these diachronic
- embroider components
His inclusion of a ‘Plain of Jars’ (Plateau of the Vases at Bomarzo), a giant mask of a Hindu Pan (sculpture Heads and mask in Orisin’s garden), the Apollo-like statue and stone leopard are specific features linking Bawa to humanist tradition. The older allegorical presentation serves Bawa’s investigation into contemporary configuration of image and pure sensation, or feeling
- spatial rhythm and ritual, he made of a very linear and circular line.
He created the linear plan in his effort to capture the landscape area and also creating vista in every step of the site as a gardens and landscapes leaves a considerable residue of subconscious understanding in the mind.
2. Alvar Aalto
He renowned with his humanism architecture, he has produced many building that related with nature. Some of his methodology in creating spaces that related with the design project are:
- Aalto’s thought that wood was central idea: its biological characteristic, its limited heat conductivity, he utilised the semantic richness of wood to enliven his architecture and the other hand he said that how material’s most beautiful examples are born of the interaction of the immaterial elements of light and space can be answer only through the building them selves.
- Architecture has an ulterior motive which always lurks, so to speak, around the corner, the thought of creating a paradise. It is the only purpose of houses, if not the house would become simpler and more trivial. Aalto trying to create the humanism in one place, where people have to enter the in between space for preparing the visitor and also as a transition places before entering the main area.
3. Le Corbusier
Modern architect that very high sensibility in harmonious where he wanted to modular and the curve line.
- He is the first who introduced about modular measure in creating beauty of natural. Modulor theory related with sequence because the measure of body will achieve here.
- Related with the measure in the modulur theory of Le Corbusier, world already known within the Fibonacci and golden section that related with nature measurement of beauty.
B. Site
Site as the place where we can explore more about design is chosen by relating within the title of the project. For the first step the site is one of resort in Bali Island, it took only the plan one of the standard room.
The first of all is the contextual within the site, because the site is in Bali, therefore Balinese traditional architectural will engage the design.
C. Translation Methodology
Translation or transformation methodology is done based on research result and engaging within the theme of the design project. Here is the diagram showing the connection of all the steps.
The diagram will enclose in the next page.
D. Design
Design process continuing after the translation of methodology, there are five of design methods, the applications of the strategy to the design are:
- Combining Horizontal and vertical line, from the perception of Balinese people.
Combining vertical and horizontal lines.
- Ritual, repetition and regularly.
-The combination of lines will be repeated in the spaces, beginning in the main entrance, and then continuing inside the room creating the repetition.
- Preparation the visitor within the space in between before entering the main area, in this area the repetition of line will be starting.
The repetition not merely in inside spaces, the repetition will be application in landscape, as a pattern of plant
The nice or beauty of measurement can be use le Corbusier modulor theory or Fibonacci in creating the repetition.
- Balance and harmony, where the point is trying to find out the dynamism.
The existing site is already in a symmetric and linear form, therefore, in continuing of design it will be balance.
Using the repetition in spaces, this kind of shape will using as a wardrobe and drawer.

- Natural elements, such as water, fire, wind, earth, and wood and the collaboration within the immaterial spaces, light, sound, and the fragrant.
Collaboration between the material and immaterial will be shown in the entrance door, whereas when the water crash the stone in the square pool, it will produced sound, and the arrangement of plants in the backside of bedroom will sent the fragrance when wind is coming. All this collaboration will be made the space feeling more alive and the atmosphere will created.
Fire element will be appeared in the bathroom design, whereas fire and water has a purification meaning.
- Allegorical deployment components, which means is a figurative mode of representation conveying a meaning other than literal. It is generally treated as a figure of rhetoric, but an allegory does not have to be expressed in language, it may be addressed to the eye, and is often found in realistic sculpture or representative art, and appeal to imagination.
Allegorical element will disrupt the jar, because it contains of earth and also water. The curve shapes, makes this elements as a balancing with the stiff line that produces because of the repetition.
CONCLUSION
The design project first is finished by the application the concept to the resort room, it gives some lessons in how produce human experience and engage human mind with the spaces. Creating the material and immaterial in a space as an activate way to create the atmosphere.
The Expectation from this design project A is hopefully the theory that have already been researching will be useful in the next design project step.
