Based on the research and understanding on the philosophical ideas of protagonist references, I combine and summarize conceptual interpretations that can impact my design approach in lighting phenomena. The approaches are: colour application and dissolved space that is shown through Dan Flavin’s works, texture and characteristics of materials obviously shown in Flavin’s and Mary Temple’s works, and also reflected light that expressed in Temple’s painting of shadow.

In terms of lighting phenomena, I can understand that there are typology that define light into 3 categories: strong and pure light, negative light (shadow), reflected light (play of light). Strong and pure light is represented in sunlight and direct lighting into a space. The negative quality of light, shadow provides haptic experience inside a space. The third category, play of light, includes reflecting and diffracting light through all kinds of medium.

Those three types of lighting phenomena affect design philosophy in terms of enact light in positive and negative quality. In the positive way, transmitted and direct light through space and negative way is shadow that brings nostalgia. The strategy is, directing light into a space poetically, aiming to create diffused light and shadow that make the occupant subconscious towards the space and the space become dematerialized.

Developing ideas and approaches, to be applied in my design project, and with the purpose of dematerializing space, I translate them in my working programme according to the context of relevance.

CONTEXTUAL DESIGN APPROACH

Light transmission through various medium is resulted in various phenomena. Basically the concept is reflecting and transmitting light through translucent materials, combines with texture and colour. Observed light phenomena that can be captured and will be applied to the design are:

1.1 Playing the light by placing mirror on the floor (outside) and on the ceiling will make it different phenomena in the space. The sunlight hit the mirror and it will be transmitted through the materials, go through inside the space, and reflect the sky outside.

Reflection of the sky on the water

The method is using translucent material that can either transmit or screen the light and glass. The light that comes from the reflection that is coming through is projected at the ceiling, and it will create different atmosphere inside the space. The intention is to bring the outdoor phenomena such as sky, to be felt inside the space. Therefore tactile experience can be felt. The context is residential space and commercial space.

Development study that is conducted to address this phenomena, by creating model experiment. The aim is to feel the real feeling about the reflected light phenomena that is expected.

Mirror in the outside Reflection on the ceiling

(looking upward)

Reflection coloured material

(looking upward)

1.2 Woven wall and phenomena of shinning material is the second context that I want to address. Shinning material such as stainless steel sheet, has very unique characteristic, which it is not transparent yet has high reflecting effect, and its reflecting effect is distinct with other materials. Enhancing its character, this material is break down into woven form.

White illumination Yellow illumination

Warm white illumination

The shadow effect towards the space is look like wave, and makes the space shinning and feels like water waves. As we can see, under different ambient of light colour the effect will be different toward the space. Under yellow illumination the shadow and reflected light change the space mood into warm atmosphere.

Incorporating with ERCO Light Scout is necessary, in order to enhance the light effect with this shinning material.

The context of this design is also residential and commercial space. Residential is picked because house is a place where we ultimately sense the space. By having outside phenomena to be experienced at home will make the space alive. While for the commercial space, unique play of light will attract visitors and create ambience of colour.

UPDATED PROGRAMME PLAN

2.1 Cooperating with ERCO

Contact with ERCO Light scout, to provide the lighting installation and technology. For the final exhibition, it is planned to construct and design 2 spaces of light phenomena, enhance with new application in light technology. The plan is involving latest technology that strengthens my light design concept for both approach 1 and 2.

2.2 Investigate and process design phenomena 1 and 2.

Explore more experiments based on both phenomena, and applied into space design.

Introduction

Living around the area which is full of pressure is one of the choices that someone has to do it, no matter it will give the happiness or unhappiness, but through the year and through the time one society will adapt with everything surrounding them. Realized it or not, inside their mind there is still something or space where they save some dream to have a better life or everything. Some of them will feel not happy and do something not in their mood.

All of these are effect of routine daily activity and ritual that they did, some of them who are accepted this they can do it better, but who are against it, sometimes will feel desperate.

Landscape as an area which are people usually passing bay everyday before they are going work or doing their activity have a big influence, direct or indirectly in giving nuance that effect the mood of a person.

Singapore which are very restricted in an area of land, build their environment vertically as attentive reason of land use. Human living are in Singapore consist of the area of landed property and un-landed property, which means like HDB, apartment, and condominium.

Some of the un-landed property, like HDB block, lack of the facilities for their inhabitants compare with apartment and condominium.

Purpose of doing this research are achieving the definition of meditative area and implant the idea to the site specific, by hoping people who are living inside the HBD block can experience the quality of meditative space.

Area of site specific

HDB is one of housing whereas 50%-90% of Singapore’s population are currently living in HDB flats, with high density housing being a solution to the problem of overcrowding.

HDB block as an area of living for society, which in a big area, there are consists of several blocks in one area, and enclosed by the facilities, like playground, multi-purpose hall, field, and place for sitting.

The HDB is located in the area of commonwealth close, near the MRT commonwealth. (Explain within using images, explain surrounding).

The covered area of this site is about 25% covered area and 75% uncovered area. These 75% consist of circulation, green area, facility such as building parking, maintenance area, garden, playground, multi purposed hall, field, and barbeque area.

Site analyses

1. Activity

The area of this HDB is very large, the site specific is considered in the selected area which is in the yellow border shown in the image.

There are some areas provided for the human inhabitants here are multi purpose hall, playground, gathering area, amphitheatre, and entrance area. Landscape as the part of the environment is important for the dwellers as an extended space from their block and as the place for the social interaction. Some area that provided here mostly used as the way their purposed by the dwellers in a particular time.

From the overall analyse in the site, the amphitheatre is an interesting area, whereas this area should be used for a performance activity, but this place become the most silent area of all. Based on the analyse and conversation with some inhabitants, in this area there are not much people going in, some reasons are because of the circulation is uncommon for the one who is first time coming to this block, it is quite enclosed by the blocks and lied in the middle of the slope, and the last it lacked of facility as a performance area.

Because the lack of activity happening here, therefore this place some of the time like morning and night using as a place practised tai chi and some people sitting down there for just spent their time alone overwhelming with inside his mind.

There are some places for activity provided in this Block area:

2. Circulation (people coming in and going out)

The passages around here are mostly linear, and link from one activity to another activity within the monotone and static form of linear. Not much an attractive activity for the inhabitant inside, where they want to have some pleasure. The used of material is lack.

3. Lack and strength of activity

The block and the landscape here are standing one by one, where the design is not connected one and another, in the way they link out.

In a 24 hours circle time, some places are usually used as an activity area but, in the other hand this place are also silent.

RESEARCH

Explanation about the purusha and prakriti

Purusha and prakriti is one of the philosophies coming from Hinduism concept. The purpose of these philosophies is actually explaining the manifestation of the world as a macrocosm, and also describe microcosm. The purpose of these concepts is to retrace back to the subtle element of Purusha, as the ending objective of our live. The process of Self-realization is one of attention reversing the process of manifestation to its source.

We are familiar with the process by which our mind has a memory arise, which triggers emotion, causing chains of thoughts to emerge from that, and to then further emerge into actions and speech. Each of these is a process of one level of functioning emerging or evolving out of the previous, while each of those levels still exists on its own. In this way, the action and speech (which emerge from mind) still coexist with the whole of the conscious mind; all of these coexist, while one leads to the next, with the grosser emerging from the subtler. So it is with all the levels of Prakriti. Prakriti is infused with pure consciousness, which is called Purusha. It is not just describing about the evolutes of chains of thought and emotions, but also the evolutes of the instrument by which we think and emote. This is taking us to the core of our being.

Experiencing consciousness is important is that the process of enlightenment or awakening is one of the reversing the process, of tracing our way back through the stages of evolutes, which is the meditation process withdrawing consciousness from the evolutes. To achieve these purpose the very much need place is a place where someone could spent time knowing about self, including inner space (mind and physiological) and outer space (constructed space).

Landscape as apart of the building has a big effort in supporting the environment. It is here that the human dwellers can literally retreat into themselves. The realization of a landscape design vision is a process. The aim is to incorporate the awareness or cognition of these aspects in a playful manner that will stimulates the desire to conquer and to take possession of the space.

Experience of Meditative areas

A.

Some images that also explain more about the experiences of meditative are, where this area is involved within a personal area.

1. Space constructed by Architect Tadao Ando

The space constructed by Architect Tadao Ando in Kyomji Temple in Japan.

This building is created by architect Tadao Ando in japan, ando wanted to create a building that would return to the origins of wooden architecture, a single structure made up of multiple parts, each full of tension. The sequences of the wood oriented in one direction, it managed people concentration. The repetition and rhythm of these area become very much strictly the one to concentrate with what they see in front, it adjust and create our vision to see something or vista. It is also induced someone to concentrate and release.

2. Chapel Building by Architect Peter Zumthor

The image is a religious monolith. The work of architect Peter Zumthor raises the question of ideal outer beauty, the proportion of things, and the poetics of detail. Atmosphere in his oeuvre as an aesthetic; it envelopes us when we visit his buildings. Upon entering his works, we are brought to a level of emotional timelessness. Upon entering his works, we are brought to a level of emotional timelessness. Instead of confusion and distraction, the space articulate strength, balance, and peace. The prayer room allows for an amazing sense of concentration and privacy. Enveloped by the walls, the space embraces and holds us. The traces of light draw the eyes slowly towards the sky. The silent in the chapel allows one to hear one’s to hear own breath and heartbeat. All senses awaken to experience the very small, oval-shaped interior space. The essence of burnt wood lingers in the air and is a reminder of our origins.

3. Artwork by Richard Sera

Artworks by Richard Serra, Nasher Sclupture Centre, Dalas

This artwork is by Richard Serra where the feeling when firstly coming to this area is feeling a little bit unsettling where it shocking the mind first and then fill up the mind with the direction.

It shows that someone running between the two giant steel plates, and from this picture shows how outside light and the gray sky and green of the grass penetrates and illuminates the spaces.

It curves seem to lean precariously and carve unexpected shifts in volume and depth, making the experience of walking between the plates a bit unsettling. The sculptures define space and transform its surroundings. Walking between the halves of this sculpture was an illuminating, isolating, and liberating experience – a way to escape the city for a few seconds. The material of metal with a slightly slanted form, make people inside feels the gravity and like entering a cave. Here, the feeling of unsettling is produced through the wall constructed, another constructed that perhaps give the feeling of unsettling is the constructed of floor, where the texture is created in a wavy form.

4. Images of the reflection in the mirror

The reflections of the candles in the mirror are repeated in unlimited way, and guide a person in one direction. Because of the never ending of the shadow, and it also make a little space looks bigger because of these reflection, it is induced someone become in a one vision through the reflection.

How to connect it with the constructed space where this combination material will help us to release our mind and induced it slowly to the one direction of concentration, and it will become a very supportive way transport to another level of consciousness.

Enclosed area awareness slowly induced concentration personal space silent.

The meditative aura or nuances shaped in our mind regarding the cooperation with the material that captured by our senses before it informed into mind.

Enclosed place is a very much place where it developed our sense of privacy of personal space, enclosed in constructed and enclosed our inner space of mind when we concentration in one thing.

The sequences of order constructed spaces surrounded which induced our perception of a place or space to the next direction, the artwork of using a huge metal in a way to guide our awareness when passing this area, the awareness because of different feeling in uncomforted way made us realized about inner’s.

Reflective material like mirror gives us the shadow or the reflection on it, which means of the

B. Meditative area are a place which is enclosed space, it gives a perception and definition about place which is should be silent and quiet as the requirement, but in the other hand meditative is not merely rely on the space but mostly in our mind. Therefore whether the place which is crowded by people still has an aura of meditative become one thing that should be noticed.

Some of the images below showing about the meditative area in a crowd area:

The installation, free to the public, allowed the hall to become a gathering place, a space for what Benjamin calls, in a 1926 essay on his beloved collection of children’s books, “pure, imaginative contemplation,” a practice familiar to children when they play with soap bubbles, watercolours, magic lantern projectors – games where colours are transparent. “Their magic lies not in the colour object or in the mere dead colour, but in the colour glow, the colour brilliance, the ray of colour light.” This brilliance, colour, and reflective glow returns in Benjamin’s fiery neon pool.

WEST 8 – Santa Giulia-Italia

Creating of communal gardens within the oval shaped built areas, the park provides links between several urban areas and with its gently undulating and decorative surface, offers a green oasis within the overall development. The enclosed area in the decorative surface gives a simple barrier as a enclosing space of personal when going in.

Picture above are the installation of artwork by artist Anish Kapor in Washington, DC.

The primary shape is a bean nut, made of aluminium which is very huge called cloud gate, because it reflect the surrounding of area. Inside this artwork is more interesting where the ceiling is blur and the shadow reflect in this area become amaze and interesting for the people.

Meditative is also Awareness related with the preparation of a place, of a preparation entering one place. It is related with the link way of the block, how in engaging the block become one in a whole landscape.

DESIGN APPROACH

Based on the site specific and the research related the thesis topic, will be examine further in developing the idea into the site specific. Meditative area which is figure out from the concept of the Hinduism concept and elaborated into the meditative area.

Meditative area which is has a very broad meaning will be implant in a specific manner to solve the problem in the site area.

1. Invite the block as a part of the landscape as an active elements

The building of HDB block and its landscape is actually not well-connected, whereas not the building is very passive within the environment.

How to engage the building become active with the environment is one way in approaching to create unity the environment. To make this building become active is by treat the block as an artwork in the landscape. The building where is very much high enclosed the space inside, from outside is look alike a gate, the perception of gate emerge based on the shape of the huge of this block and human inhabitant always enter and exit through in between area. Therefore it engaged the block as a gate have another of perception as a border entering inside within the different aura and purpose within outer area. The gate itself will be developed in the area of the two blocks as a barrier of entrance or exit, where someone come in they will feel different when whether entering and exit from this space.

2. Circulation inside the block more active as a link way

The passage of the surrounding is very static and stiff, the circulation as a path where people coming in has an impact as a horizontal way. Curve shape of the circulation dominate the whole of circulation it caused a more dynamic link way, the other reason is where the passage dominate with the big distance of passage to the smaller distance of passage is has a purpose to narrow down the view which mean also narrow down the emotion as awareness before entering the space.

3. Amphitheater as the silent space will represent as a meditative area.

Amphitheater as the most silent space should be more activated as a place for meditative in quietness and elaborated this space with the cooperation with material.

The approaches is by adjust this space based on what people doing in here, where some people used this space for tai chi and just sitting down to relaxation.

The material surrounded where the in front of this stage is there are a tall building which is very high and has a form of height will be developed it to become a way where our eyes will captured this.

4. Embrace the space within meditative aura by elaborate the experience of meditative in some activity area.

Another space where it is crowded need to implant the concept of the building where it stills a meditative space whether in crowded space.

CONCLUSION

Meditative and reflective need enclosed place where people coming in and feel they has a private zone.

Enclosed place is a place whether enclose our body and also our mind. And feel some experience of it.

Describing and examining the purpose of the meditative and reflective in this area of landscape. The purpose is meditative, where it is means that someone need personal zone, in every function of this block give one of the meditative experiences. Where each places are not using in a whole 24 hours circle, but sometimes in the late night old people or other people using it, because they want to have a privacy and personal places.

Landscape as the part of the building not merely gives a space that people just joining for a physically pleasure but also intellectual pleasure. The gain of meditative and reflective is not easy to capture by people, it depends of their level of maturates.

Meditative as the way back to retrace our self and our mind, meditative need a place where it enveloped and can embrace them to knowing their self to feel save. Save to relax save in doing anything (awareness). Meditative space is a space where someone can engage their mind to one thing, it not just when they alone, it is possible happen in the crowded area, where their mind is concentrating in one thing like in the IT movie.
Detail some experiences:

Water with the reflection in the amphitheater.

Narrow view to the something, where it is inducing our view to get concentration.

weather of the place where they can enjoyed the space when it is one’s happening (the illuminating of sunset)

enclosed space by using the sequences of wood or the huge size of material to make unsettling experience before they get the inner of consciousness

Enclosed place, where some kids or people like to have their personal space like for reading, or everything.

Continuing research about poetic lighting design with an objective to create spatial experience using light, it is important to focus in one specific aspect of light. In order to help focusing on clear framework, a lighting competition design brief is used. New York Student Lighting Competition is held by the New York section of the Illumination Engineer’s Society of North America. From this competition theme: “Evocative Luminance” which aims to trigger an emotion or spark a memory, light will be specifically explored to make people remember about certain event or emotion. Enlarge its capacity, extend what light can do for a space. The competition brief requirements are:

Entries should be a light installation and can be made of any material.

Each entry must include at least one electric light source (no open flame or flammable sources allowed).

The competition does not state about limitation in type of site of which the installation should be placed. One of the competition objectives is to explore light as an art form, and it is relevant with previous research about how artist create an artwork by using light poetically.

Theme and brief of this competition shall be the client for conducting the light research and create light design. Based on the requirements above it is clear that lighting source will be artificial light and it can be in a form of projection and made of anything that is not flammable source. Light installation should prove as a medium to recall a memory and eventually evoke viewer’s emotion. Contextualization of personal focus in the design is about light as memory.

According to this brief and theme, a selection of a relevant site is important. A space where memory is exhibited. Appropriate site (situation) will support the idea of light as memory. From this understanding, National Museum of Singapore is chosen for the site. Considerations and reasons for choosing the museum as a relevant site are:

National Museum of Singapore is home for historical artifacts and inheritance of the nation. It means this is a place where people can remember and experience about the past (relates with memory).

As a museum, the National Museum exhibits history through cutting edge ways of presentations. It supports the light installation which tries to exhibit specific memory through light in innovative way.

Site Evaluation

About National Museum of Singapore

The building is located at 93 Stamford Road, Singapore. National museum of Singapore is designed to be a center for culture that combining historical collection with exhibitions that focusing on 20th popular culture.
History of the Building

Since the light design is related with memory and history, it is important to look at the chronological history of the museum.

1887 : Opening of the Raffles Library and Museum by the governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Frederick Weld, when Singapore was part of the British Straits Settlements. It was known for its natural history collection of Southeast Asia as well as its ethnology and archeological collections.

1942-1945 : During Japanese occupation period, the Raffles Library was under the charge of Japanese.

1960 : The museum was separated from the library. Following independence in 1965 it was renamed National Museum to reflect its new role in nation building.

During this period of time the natural history collection, as well as ethnology and archeology collection was taken to Malaysia. So basically, Singapore does not have ancient ethnology and archeology artifacts.

1993 : The National Museum became part of National Heritage Board.

2003 : Commencement of the National Museum of Singapore’s redevelopment project. The Rivertales exhibition at Riverside Point was launched in August to help the museum maintain its presence.

2004 : The start of museum’s redevelopment on 25 November, and the first public announcement of the redeveloped museum as National Museum of Singapore.

2005 : On 28 November, the structural completion of the building was celebrated through topping off ceremony.

2006 : On December, the official opening of the National Museum of Singapore.

This chronology of events from the museum also reflects development and history of Singapore as society and nation. Development and changes in its function, impact the architectural development. As it is stated above, the museum building redeveloped and extended with new modern extension. The architecture itself becomes iconic because it brings the old and new together in one single site. Originally built in neo-classical architecture, the museum building is joined with modern extension of glass and metal. The extension doubles the capacity of existing building to become the biggest museum in Singapore, at 18.400 sqm. The restoration and extension honors the original architecture and puts a new face with massive modern extension. Some architectural highlights from new extension of museum that honors the old building are:

Glass rotunda

15 metres high and 24 metres wide glass rotunda is a modern interpretation of the old original colonial building, rotunda dome. This cylindrical space in the new extension is main entrance to the history gallery.

Third floor is mainly used as offices and lab. Public is not allowed to enter this level. Access to this floor is only from staff room from second floor.

Specific Space Analysis

After analyzing the site generally, we are going to focus on two specific spaces to apply poetic light scheme. Based on the observation, old Rotunda catches attention of visitors because of its dome and light that cast through the stained glass so it becomes a gathering space for them. Also as a foyer for this museum, it has historical background because it is the main exhibition area displayed ethnographic collection back in its first years.

Another space is basement space under the glass Rotunda. It is an empty space, a dead end. Visitors neglect this space because it is just nothing to see. Although people walk through this space they do not notice the space. It is a contradiction with the old Rotunda space which is busy area. This basement space is important because it should resemble the spirit of the old Rotunda, where people gather and sense the meaning of the space. Thus, this is a problematic space that should be addressed.

Conceptual light design is expected to make this space alive, and become a memorable space, meaningful space of light that evoke memory and emotion.

Problem Statement

Identified problems (opportunities) in National Museum of Singapore are:

The museum wants to attract more visitor especially young people to visit. The task is how to pull young crowd to appreciate, experience and learn about history and art.

Concept as modern museum with contemporary displays and cutting edge history exhibition requires new perspective of space design in terms of poetic light.

Concept Description

Based on the space analysis, there are two spaces which have contradiction condition. Since basement space is an empty space and it requires people to come so the space will be alive, it has to be connected with other space. The design concept is movement with light because the idea is to transport people from one space to another with guidance of light.

The basic concept is to connect the old Rotunda space, as crowded space with the basement space. Light as the connection device will form a light route (red line) that will lead people to move across the museum. The route is important because it will drive people from crowded space into empty space, experience the movement of light space and highlight of spatial containers. The intention of making the basement space alive is to prove light can change an empty space into a memorable space and even experience memory.

As shown in the picture above, red line covers and connects the problematic areas. This red line will be the path of light (light route). Light route goes through other spaces in the museum such as the hallway so these spaces will also establish a connection between old Rotunda and basement space.

The route is a journey of people’s life. Everyone has his own journey, his own history. Museum where people are looking back to history, light will lead people to look back in their lives.

As a light journey this route is divided into four parts as a translation of human life phases. First phase is instability to elaborate how weak and unstable human is in his early years. Second phase is phase of struggle and obstacles in human life, which is important phase that everyone has to overcome with. Third phase is a bright phase as a translation of best moments in someone’s life. The last part is reflection phase which is a phase of remembering entire journey and reflect on it, in calmness and depth.

Research about Light

Previous research had done in terms of poetic light through some artworks contribute in the development of this light research. Study about Dan Flavin and Mary Temple, artists who work with light and engage space at the same time demonstrate how light is extended into deeper layer of meaning. Light does not merely to fulfill illumination task, it is a device to add meaning and trigger emotion.

In Flavin’s work light is stripped down to basic by using simple fluorescent tubes, light take over the atmosphere. The space is immersed in colorful light. His light blur the spatial border eventually it affects our perception and emotion of the space.

Mary Temple works with light as shadows. She paints subtle shadows on architectural setting. Through her paintings light is engaged with phenomenology of memory. She plays with sub consciousness of viewers, interrupt perception of what is real and what is not within a freeze time frame. Time is important issue that will affect her works because it will affect light color tone, also the form of shadows.

Further research is done in architectural project by Daniel Libeskind, the Jewish Museum, Berlin. Research on Jewish Museum project is relevant because its spaces are designed and filled with poetic light as remembrance of a historical event, the Holocaust period. The concept of between lines, the history of Jewish in Germany, straight line but broken into many fragments, the other is tortuous line but continuing indefinitely. It is applied in the building form. Strong design element of this museum is play with voids, as resemblance of emptiness, embodiment of absence.

All those design elements strengthen with conceptual light to capture the emotion back when the historical moment occurred. As shown in the Holocaust tower, in such scale, with narrow and extremely high space, the space left in dark creates a frantic space and light from above as a slit of hope.

Design Philosophy and Application

From the two artists, Flavin and Temple a conclusion can be generated is light has a strong impact on psychology and memory. Approaches from these two artists can be applied into light space design which is by using strong colored ambient light and moving shadows projection. In architecture as shown in Jewish Museum, light has proven to evoke memory. In the context of National Museum light should also be able to evoke people’s memory and emotion through light on understanding conceptual approaches of masters’ works.

Layout plan

Section

Conceptual approach based on Flavin’s works is highlight the space with strong light that make the viewers feel the space is dissolved and replace by light, and sense the space is changing, in terms of mood and atmosphere. Encounter with strong ambient of light will evoke people’s emotion. This approach is applied in the two parts of the light journey design.

The first part of light installation is placed in the old Rotunda, using green color to express something new, fresh, a beginning of life. Angled, small fluorescent tubes are installed as an expression of unstable feeling.

Fluorescent lamp is used in this first installation as an expression of minimalist design and subtle light interjection in this historical space. Small size of the lamps is meant to give first impression of colorful light fill the space and not noticing the light source.

Moving to next phase of the light journey, phase of struggle and obstacles, light comes in form red crossing blue which is located blocking the hallway. Opposing feeling and tension is expected to be felt in this space.

Entering phase three, light installation consist of transparent glass, LED lamps and movement sensor. Light effect that is wished to achieve is sense of excitement. LED lights give effect of twinkling light and it will light up only when people passing by a sensor on the glass panel thus it is an ephemeral experience of light.

Final phase of the light journey is end up at the basement floor with enclosed screen walls. After following light route people will enter space of calmness where light is shown in form of moving reflection. Moving reflection means adopting sunlight that is designed to penetrate through patterned screen, and the light is changing in tone and moving, give effect of subtle light and shadow reflection inside space. Floor lamp is also applied to project the shadow of people inside the space to the screen facing the escalator so viewing from outside there are overlapping shadows and light.

Detail basement layout

In the whole design scheme, scale plays important role because sense of space conveyed by poetics of light will be emphasized with play of scale. The space will be overwhelmed with light.

Conclusion

Applying light as a device to connect spaces can evoke memory and emotion of people’s personal life history.

Poetic light with intention to spark memory and emotion will activate spatial meaning.

Design principle that can be generated from this light research is poetic connection of spaces is possible with play of light and shadows.

ABSTRACT

Design Project as a series of a deep procession until the last stage, divided into three stages. As the first step of the stages, the framework of this stage is related with the Thesis that will be developed further and move on from some researches that have been done through the research methodology.

In development area of design project A, some efforts have been done by following the framework which was already made:

Research activity, including documentary analysis and case studies from some architects that related with the thesis.

Translation or transform research method from the case studies into design methodology that will feed the design project.

Choosing one site as an exploration area of design

Design activity, including concept scheme, sketches, and model to achieve the goal of the purpose in creating Balinese atmosphere.

All this process have connection each others and will be more explain in the next chapter, therefore all of this process will affect the design process.

CONTENT

This design project for the first stage framework explores the interaction between project and the relation of work that have been done so far. There are four parts in this content that will explore to explain the process of the first design project.

A. Research

Some researches have been done so far in this project are:

1. Geoffery Bawa

It is useful to keep in mind that Bawa is very much a man of the end of modern era seen from his years of study. Actually, it gave effect because of he was trained abroad, widely read and travelled, so that he knows what is going on elsewhere in the world, but in the one hand, he is admired with the Ceylon architecture. He has done some effort to reconcile both of these diachronic

- embroider components

His inclusion of a ‘Plain of Jars’ (Plateau of the Vases at Bomarzo), a giant mask of a Hindu Pan (sculpture Heads and mask in Orisin’s garden), the Apollo-like statue and stone leopard are specific features linking Bawa to humanist tradition. The older allegorical presentation serves Bawa’s investigation into contemporary configuration of image and pure sensation, or feeling

- spatial rhythm and ritual, he made of a very linear and circular line.

He created the linear plan in his effort to capture the landscape area and also creating vista in every step of the site as a gardens and landscapes leaves a considerable residue of subconscious understanding in the mind.

2. Alvar Aalto

He renowned with his humanism architecture, he has produced many building that related with nature. Some of his methodology in creating spaces that related with the design project are:

- Aalto’s thought that wood was central idea: its biological characteristic, its limited heat conductivity, he utilised the semantic richness of wood to enliven his architecture and the other hand he said that how material’s most beautiful examples are born of the interaction of the immaterial elements of light and space can be answer only through the building them selves.

- Architecture has an ulterior motive which always lurks, so to speak, around the corner, the thought of creating a paradise. It is the only purpose of houses, if not the house would become simpler and more trivial. Aalto trying to create the humanism in one place, where people have to enter the in between space for preparing the visitor and also as a transition places before entering the main area.

3. Le Corbusier

Modern architect that very high sensibility in harmonious where he wanted to modular and the curve line.

- He is the first who introduced about modular measure in creating beauty of natural. Modulor theory related with sequence because the measure of body will achieve here.

- Related with the measure in the modulur theory of Le Corbusier, world already known within the Fibonacci and golden section that related with nature measurement of beauty.

B. Site

Site as the place where we can explore more about design is chosen by relating within the title of the project. For the first step the site is one of resort in Bali Island, it took only the plan one of the standard room.

The first of all is the contextual within the site, because the site is in Bali, therefore Balinese traditional architectural will engage the design.

C. Translation Methodology

Translation or transformation methodology is done based on research result and engaging within the theme of the design project. Here is the diagram showing the connection of all the steps.

The diagram will enclose in the next page.

D. Design

Design process continuing after the translation of methodology, there are five of design methods, the applications of the strategy to the design are:

Combining Horizontal and vertical line, from the perception of Balinese people.

Combining vertical and horizontal lines.

Ritual, repetition and regularly.

-The combination of lines will be repeated in the spaces, beginning in the main entrance, and then continuing inside the room creating the repetition.

- Preparation the visitor within the space in between before entering the main area, in this area the repetition of line will be starting.

The repetition not merely in inside spaces, the repetition will be application in landscape, as a pattern of plant

The nice or beauty of measurement can be use le Corbusier modulor theory or Fibonacci in creating the repetition.

Balance and harmony, where the point is trying to find out the dynamism.

The existing site is already in a symmetric and linear form, therefore, in continuing of design it will be balance.

Using the repetition in spaces, this kind of shape will using as a wardrobe and drawer.

Natural elements, such as water, fire, wind, earth, and wood and the collaboration within the immaterial spaces, light, sound, and the fragrant.

Collaboration between the material and immaterial will be shown in the entrance door, whereas when the water crash the stone in the square pool, it will produced sound, and the arrangement of plants in the backside of bedroom will sent the fragrance when wind is coming. All this collaboration will be made the space feeling more alive and the atmosphere will created.

Fire element will be appeared in the bathroom design, whereas fire and water has a purification meaning.

Allegorical deployment components, which means is a figurative mode of representation conveying a meaning other than literal. It is generally treated as a figure of rhetoric, but an allegory does not have to be expressed in language, it may be addressed to the eye, and is often found in realistic sculpture or representative art, and appeal to imagination.

Allegorical element will disrupt the jar, because it contains of earth and also water. The curve shapes, makes this elements as a balancing with the stiff line that produces because of the repetition.

CONCLUSION

The design project first is finished by the application the concept to the resort room, it gives some lessons in how produce human experience and engage human mind with the spaces. Creating the material and immaterial in a space as an activate way to create the atmosphere.

The Expectation from this design project A is hopefully the theory that have already been researching will be useful in the next design project step.

ABSTRACT

Research are systematic and organized, it systematic because there is a definite set of procedures and always done in order to get the most accurate results. In the way we done research there is a structure or method in about how doing the research, because it is planned procedure. It is also focused and limited to a specific scope.

In this research methodology will covering some areas:

1. Collected or generated information

2. Analysis of Information sets

3. Translation to Constructive Design Practices

These three steps are important things to do in research; these will help the researcher further in the application to the design. The relation between all of them will be examining further in the next chapter.

CONTENTS

First of all, it will explain about the Purusha and Prakriti, Purusha are the center of consciousness and considered to be the human mind and Prakriti is material world which contains all of our organs, matter, and energy.[1] Purusha and prakriti is come from Hindu philosophy and related with the Balinese ritual and nature. Balinese ritual in ceremony and daily activity become unity, thus in ritual of Balinese people showing the spirit thankfulness. Ritual purpose is balancing, god gives everything to us and we used it, and in the other hand we believe to give after we take as thankfulness of everything in the world.

Nature it self as a passive area, how it will become an active and invited them into the space where human is alive will become attention for the next chapter.

Knowing some approaches from some architect which is dealing with nature, as one of the approaching to the nature. As the first step of methodology is collected and generated information from that related with some architect who deal with the nature, there are three architects that will be examine as the case study. In these step not merely collected the information but also analyse the information and engage with the theme of the research.

Here are there architects that approaching with the nature as their methodology:

1. GEOFFERY BAWA

At first bawa was a lawyer, but his attention to the nature makes him changing his mind and decided continuing his study in Architecture Association in England in his age of 33.[2] Once upon a time when he did a trip, suddenly he realized that there are so many instances when his eyes was caught by a landscape, a small unimportant but beautiful building, or a large and splendid one, sometimes seen for a moment from a swiftly moving car or train. The beauty of some of these buildings, gardens, and landscapes leaves a considerable residue of subconscious understanding in the mind-a help to solve some present needs, for the right placement of a building on the site, for the need to frame and emphasise a view or to open or construct a space.[3]

According to him, framing the Vista is important; vista is a view or prospect, especially one seen through a long, narrow avenue or passage, as between rows of trees or houses. The prospect is the phenomena of the site which is as the character of the site.

The plan is very linear and symmetrical, use very much courtyard as open space inviting the light and air into the space, the sequence is created linear for making easy in roof arrangement and creating the vistas.

The plan not much in path, because the space inside is very open, so the architect just used the linear path as framing the view outside.

Vista is related within the eyes, eyes that related with the nature itself, whereas people will be engaged with the site at first they arrived. The approaching way is to the point within the linear line and stiff way. The purpose of linear shape is to catch their subconscious understanding directly, and this framing will be repeated several times.

In creating vista Bawa used several approaching, by the repetition of column, window, and doors, and in the some way he also used water.

Some approaching of Bawa’s design in creating vista.

Bawa also invited nature as courtyard inside the house plan. It is such a handsome way inviting the wind and light freely into the space, we can see from the site plan of his design. In some cases the materials like stone bring inside the space when the space lack of opportunity to enjoy the outdoor space. He is also using high polish floor, to make the outside and inside spaces become unity from the lobby floor, pool, and the sea water, as can be seen in the images below.

Character is not merely physically but also metaphysic such as the light and wind. To achieve these aims, he conveyed ancient Ceylonese culture within deployment some components. The patterns is using in railing or window, so when the sun light cast the window it produced shadow in the floor or wall.

The older allegorical presentation serves Bawa’s investigation into contemporary configuration of image and pure sensation, or feeling.[4] In this sense, he was using salvaged ancient artefacts, columns, a window or a jar in the landscape component. This presentation is a transposition of the concept into an altered context and time.

Allegory is a figurative mode of representation conveying a meaning other than literal. It is generally treated as a figure of rhetoric, but an allegory does not have to be expressed in language, it may be addressed to the eye, and is often found in realistic sculpture or representative art, and appeal to imagination.[5]

Conclusion

In the way he served vista is developed by linear and straight line, he never trying to serve the vista using circular or free line.

He didn’t use the preparation area for constructing spaces; the space that he created is to the point or directly to the nature landscape to catch the human perception when they entered the space for the first time. His Floor and wall is not much using texture but for the column he used the deployment components to evoke the human perception.
